Introduction

Researchers from Benin publish articles in international Open Access journals, for example, in 2013, 94 articles have been published with BioMed Central – an STM (Science, Technology and Medicine) publisher which has pioneered the Open Access publishing model – and among them there are highly accessed articles by researchers from Centre National Hospitalo-Universitaire (CNHU), Centre de Recherche Entomologique de Cotonou (CREC), Centre d'Étude et de Recherche sur le Paludisme Associé à la Grossesse et l'Enfance (CERPAGE), Faculté des Sciences de la Santé (FSS), Hôpital de Zone, Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD), National Malaria Control Programme, Programme Analyse de la Politique Agricole (PAPA/INRAB) and Regional Public Health Institute of Ouidah.

60 articles have been published in Public Library of Science (PLoS) international Open Access journals: PLoS ONE, PLoS Medicine and PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases by researchers from Centre de Dépistage et de Traitement de l'Ulcère de Buruli (CDTUB) d'Allada and de Lalo, Centre National Hospitalier Universitaire Hubert K. Maga at Université d'Abomey Calavi, Centre de Recherche Entomologique de Cotonou (CREC), Département de Zoologie et Génétique, Faculté des Sciences et Techniques at Université d'Abomey-Calavi, Fondation Raoul Follereau, Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, Institut des Sciences Biomédicale et Appliquées, Institut Régional de Santé Publique (IRSP), Laboratoire de Diagnostic Vétérinaire et de Sérosurveillance, Laboratoire de Référence des Mycobactéries (LRM) and Programme National de Lutte contre la Lèpre et l'Ulcère de Buruli (PNLLUB).

As of June 2015, two OA journals published in Benin are indexed in African Journals Online (AJOL). The Benin Journal of Postgraduate Medicine (BJPM) is the Official Journal of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin City. Annals of Agronomic Sciences is a scientific review with the goal to publish original articles, technical notes, reviews of literature, scientific information, in all the fields of sciences and biological technology, ecology, biochemistry, biotechnology, geology, soil sciences, agro-feedings, human and animal nutrition.
