Introduction

Researchers from Eritrea publish articles in international Open Access journals, for example, in 2013, seven articles have been published with BioMed Central – an STM (Science, Technology and Medicine) publisher which has pioneered the Open Access publishing model – by researchers from Department of Biology, University of Asmara, National Malaria Control Programme, WHO Country Office, Disease Prevention and Control and Department of Research & Human Resource Development, Ministry of Health, and Department of Flow Cytometry, MFN.

PLoS Medicine – an international, peer-reviewed, OA journal published by the Public Library of Science (PLoS) – published an article by researchers from the Ministry of Health and United Nations Population Fund.

Journal of the Eritrean Medical Association was published in 2006-2009. The journal aims were to publish and disseminate scientifically rigorous health information of Eritrean and international significance that enables policy makers, researchers, and practitioners to be more effective in the improvement of the health of Eritrean people. The journal provided immediate Open Access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. It is indexed in African Journals Online (AJOL) database.
